There is no handoff

I used to view design and engineering as distinct phases where I design and they build. But I eventually realized we are just using different lenses to solve the same puzzle.
When I map out permission inheritance for a secure deal room, I’m engineering system behavior. When the engineer structures the database to support those permissions, they are designing the architecture. We are all building the product.
I’ve seen too many projects struggle because people politely stayed in their lanes.
The best work happens when we blur the lines.
It goes beyond bringing engineers in early to spot risks. It is about dropping the “us vs them” mindset entirely. There is no handoff when you build it together. It is just one team figuring it out.
